The Crazy Horse Volksmarch is a bi-annual organized hike that covers 10K or 6.2 miles of woodlands terrain in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. It is a family-friendly event sponsored by the Black Hills Chapter of the American Volksmarch Association (AVA) and hosted by Crazy Horse Memorial®.
Cost
Admission for hikers will be waived with 3 cans of food for the Fall Volksmarch. The American Volkssport Association's hike fee is $3 (cash or check, no credit cards accepted) for each participant regardless of age. Regular admission applies to non-hikers or hikers without food.
Rules
NO PETS allowed on the trail. Also, no strollers or wheelchairs are permitted due to the rocky terrain. Social distancing is encouraged to ensure a safe environment.
Parking
PFREE. Due to the popularity of the event, parking can be some distance from the starting point and not on paved or gravel surfaces. Shuttle buses operate between these outlying parking lots and the start-finish area.
Registration
There is no advance registration. Hikers must check in at the starting point, which is at the Memorial’s upper parking area. Registration begins at 7:00 am, and hikers must register before 1 p.m. and be off the trail by 4 p.m. No late starts will be allowed.
Notes
The hike can take 2-4 hours round-trip. The trail rises 500 feet and can be rugged, with some steep inclines. The final elevation is 6,532 feet. There are 4 checkpoints along the route with portable restrooms. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The hike could be canceled due to poor weather conditions.
